We invite you to explore the towns of Asturias in a unique gastronomic adventure where you will discover the best Asturian dishes and all the history behind these culinary creations.

Cachopo
If you are a meat lover, you cannot miss trying cachopo when visiting Asturias. This typical Asturian dish consists of two breaded veal fillets stuffed with ham and cheese, a delight that will leave you wanting more. The history of cachopo dates back to the 1950s, but it has gained true popularity in recent decades.

Where to eat cachopo in Asturias
We definitely recommend trying this dish at Las Tablas del Campillín in Oviedo or Río Astur in Gijón, both renowned for their excellent cachopo.

Asturian fabada
Asturian fabada is a delight you cannot miss when visiting Asturias. It is a hearty and tasty stew, perfect for recharging energy after a day of sightseeing. It mainly consists of fabes (white beans), blood sausage, chorizo, and lacón. Native to the region, its history goes back to ancient times, being a star dish in local gastronomy.

Where to eat fabada in Asturias
We recommend stopping at Restaurante Casa Chema in Oviedo or El Llar de Viri in Candamo. Both are known for their authentic and delicious fabada. Remember to accompany your fabada with Asturian cider for the full culinary experience.

Asturian cheeses
Asturias is famous for its variety of cheeses, with over 40 different types, each with a unique taste and texture. Among the most popular are Cabrales, a strong and spicy blue cheese aged in natural caves; Afuega’l Pitu, one of the oldest cheeses in Spain with a creamy texture and slightly spicy flavor; and Gamonéu, another blue cheese but with a milder, fruitier aroma.

To try these delicious Asturian cheeses, we recommend visiting Quesería La Peral in Illas, famous for its blue cheese, or the Mercado el Fontán in Oviedo where you will find a wide selection.

Scorpion fish pie (Pastel de cabracho)
Although its name may be misleading, pastel de cabracho is not a sweet pie, but rather a kind of savory flan whose main ingredient is scorpion fish, a very tasty red fish. This dish originates from Asturian home cooking and has become one of the star starters of typical Asturian cuisine. Made with flaked scorpion fish, eggs, cream, and tomato among other ingredients, it is served cold with mayonnaise or pink sauce.

For the authentic taste of pastel de cabracho, we recommend trying it at Casa Gerardo in Prendes.

Corn tortos (Tortos de maíz)
This simple but flavorful dish consists of small cakes made from corn flour, with a bit of lard and salt. They can be eaten alone or accompanied by minced meat or fried eggs. Tortos originated in rural Asturias, where they were a staple for farmers. Today, they are a typical dish of Asturias and can be found in many restaurants and cider houses. In Gijón, we recommend La Galana, known for its delicious tortos and other traditional Asturian dishes.

Chorizo in cider (Chorizo a la sidra)
If there is one dish that sums up the essence of Asturias in a pot, it is undoubtedly chorizo a la sidra. This simple yet delicious delicacy is prepared with top-quality Asturian chorizos and natural cider from the region. The recipe is as simple as it sounds: the chorizos are slowly cooked in cider until it reduces and the sausages remain tender and full of flavor.

We recommend trying chorizo a la sidra at Sidrería Tierra Astur in Oviedo, a classic among food lovers that never fails.

Rice pudding (Arroz con leche)
To complete your gastronomic journey through Asturias, you cannot miss the delicious arroz con leche. This creamy and comforting dessert is a classic in the region. It is made with rice, milk, sugar, cinnamon, and lemon peel. The result is a sweet and smooth mixture that will make you feel at home.

Although you can find this dessert in almost any Asturian restaurant, Merendero de Covadonga in Cabranes is famous for its homemade rice pudding.
