History has turned Oviedo into a goldmine of Romanesque art and it was declared a World Heritage Site in 1985. Some of the major monuments include Santa María de Naranco, a palace from the 9th Century, commissioned by Ramiro I, which forms an architectural complex along with the Church of San Miguel de Lillo. Other Pre-Romanesque examples in the city are the Church of San Julián de los Prados and the Foncalada fountain.
