All about the Valencia Half Marathon 2023
One of the must-attend events for runners in the fall, the Valencia Half Marathon has become one of the best races in Spain and also one of the favorites of international athletes.
Every year, around 20,000 participants run through the streets of Valencia with almost no elevation, making it the fastest half marathon in the world. In fact, it is the only one to hold both the male and female world records for the 21 kilometers, which were achieved in 2020 and 2021, respectively, by Kenyan athlete Kibiwott Kandie and Ethiopian Letesenbet Gidey. In 2022, Kandie won again with an impressive time of 58:10, while German athlete Konstanze Klosterhalfen won in the women’s category with a time of 1:05:41.
Route of the Valencia Half Marathon
The 21.097,5-meter route of the Valencia Half Marathon has an elevation of only 13.8 meters, making runners practically fly through the city’s streets. The route is also very flat, with very few turns, and a straight 1.5-kilometer start, ideal for picking up a good pace right from the beginning.
The start and finish of the Valencia Half Marathon are located on Avenida dels Tarongers, and along the race, there are five refreshment stations at kilometers 5, 10, 15, 18, and 21. However, in 2023, the route was updated to go in the opposite direction, towards Bulevar Norte, making the course more comfortable for participants as it will go through wider streets.
The goal of this new route is to ensure the comfort of participants, offering a fantastic opportunity to improve personal bests. All runners will have a maximum time of 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete the race.
Registrations for the Valencia Half Marathon
Registrations for the 2023 Valencia Half Marathon sold out months ago, so it is no longer possible to purchase a race bib. The only option to participate now is to join the waiting list to get a spot freed up by injured registered runners.
The last stage of registration costs 75€, which includes the bib, chip, T-shirt, runner's bag, refreshments, medical insurance, diploma, and finisher's medal, among other benefits.
Of the 22,000 registered this year, 77% are Spanish participants, and the remaining 23% are runners coming from abroad. Additionally, 18% of the runners will debut at the half marathon distance, around 4,000 people. The percentage of female participants is 27%, a figure that continues to grow.
