Tips for planning a car trip
Traveling by car offers many advantages. The freedom and independence to go wherever you want and whenever you want position it as one of the best transportation options, far above train or airplane, but it also requires a little extra planning. Don’t worry — today we tell you the most important things you should keep in mind.
Check the car before the trip
Whether you’re using a rental car or your own, it’s important to give it a check‑up. If it’s a rental car, we recommend that you take photos of both the exterior of the vehicle and the interior and the mileage, and send them to the owner or insurer before departure. For the basic car check, remember to inspect:
Tires: check the tire pressure and make sure the wheels are not too worn and retain their tread.
Batteries: check that the terminals are well secured and that there are no leaks.
Fluids: ensure the level of coolant, brake fluid, and engine oil is adequate.
Brakes and suspension: most cars alert you on the dashboard if there is brake wear. If so, don’t be complacent and take the car in for servicing before starting your trip.
If it’s a long‑distance trip, take small breaks
If you are going to take a long trip, it is advisable to rest at regular intervals. The Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda recommends resting for 45 uninterrupted minutes after driving four hours, although you can also rest in smaller intervals of 15 to 30 minutes spread over the 4.5‑hour period. The most important thing is not to rush, enjoy the journey, and don’t set yourself a strict arrival time.
Prepare food and drink before hitting the road
Even if you plan to stop to eat along the way, it’s advisable to have some cool food and drinks ready. Imagine not finding anything you like along the route — a small cooler with some food and soft drinks will be very useful and will also make the trip more enjoyable and seem shorter.
Energize the trip with music!
Music will make your trip much more fun. Look for travel playlists on Spotify or take the opportunity to listen to that soundtrack that will accompany you along your route. You have plenty of time, and you’re sure to discover more than one great track.
Venture out — but with sense!
Traveling by car allows us to deviate from the planned route and visit different places. This option makes car trips a totally special experience that you should take advantage of! Look at the charming little towns and places you will pass through and include them in your route — but don’t go crazy if you still want to reach your destination!
Book accommodation in advance
Although traveling by car is an adventure, it’s better not to risk unexpected surprises. Make your accommodation reservations in advance and avoid having to look at the last minute for that perfect place to rest.
Enjoy traveling by car
Don’t forget that trips are meant to be lived and enjoyed, so relax, start the engine, and head to your destination. Next stop?
