The island's capital lies to the south of the Anaga hills and to the north of Mount Teide, between San Cristóbal de La Laguna and the Atlantic Ocean. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the site of the largest commercial port in the Canary Islands, you will find pedestrianised streets full of shops, restaurants and a variety of entertainment facilities. The night life in Calle de La Noria with its bars and taverns, San Francisco church, Plaza de la Candelaria and Plaza del Príncipe de Asturias are obligatory stops on a route that combines ancient and modern.
Capital of leisure
As well as being the capital of the Canary Islands Autonomous Community (jointly with Las Palmas de Gran Canaria), capital of the province of the same name and of the island of Tenerife, Santa Cruz is an ideal place to enjoy shopping, learn about the identity of the Canaries through an extensive cultural programme and discover the gastronomic specialities of the archipelago. Many sites of interest are located near the Silken Atlántida, our family hotel in Tenerife. They include the Adán Martín Auditorium, designed by leading Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava; the Canary Islands Museum of Military History; the fairs precinct; the Museum of Nature and Mankind; César Manrique Maritime Park with its 22,000 m2 of salt water pools located in a setting that combines modern buildings with a volcanic landscape, and the botanical gardens, known as the Palmetum, home to the island's most characteristic plant species.
Superb beaches
Another obligatory visit when you are in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is one of the best known beaches in the Canary Islands: Las Teresitas. Located only 7 km from the city centre, this is an ideal day trip for families with children, thanks to a breakwater which shelters it from waves and strong currents. The fine sand beach, which is dotted with palm trees and other local vegetation, is 1,500 metres long and has showers, changing rooms and sun loungers.
Unique gastronomy
The gastronomy of the Canary Islands is one of its most distinctive features. In addition to the many choices at Las Teresitas, a magnificent option for enjoying fine food and local cuisine is San Andrés, a fishing village full of restaurants and bistros, ideal for trying fish and seafood dishes accompanied with papas arrugadas (wrinkly potatoes) and mojo sauce. All over the island you can also eat in the local guachinches, where the treats on offer includes gofio (a traditional dish made with toasted corn).

Santa Cruz de Tenerife has numerous pedestrian streets, flanked by rows of balconies, shops and restaurants. It is a city with hundreds of possibilities for families, young people and those of all ages. The island of Tenerife also boasts unique natural features: the spectacular Montes de Anaga, to the north, and Teide, the famous volcano, which rises to over 3,700 metres. The beaches facing the ocean, La Laguna, the port and the spectacular contrasts of Santa Cruz, together with an average annual temperature of 21°C, make the capital of Tenerife a favourite destination for people from all parts of the world.
