Located in the north-west of the peninsula, Valladolid is the most important provincial capital of the Autonomous Community of Castilla y León. What to see in Valladolid?
The city, also known as Pucela, stands on the banks of the Pisuerga and contains numerous points of interest for travellers who want to experience Castile to the full. The heart of the historical centre is Plaza Mayor, around which there are numerous museums, squares, palaces, charming elegant streets, restaurants, churches, convents and green parks. No visitor should miss Campo Grande, the city's largest park, whose 115,000 m2 are home to the Fuente de la Fama fountain and the popular Oriental Museum. The Norias de Santa Victoria Park is also of special interest.
Among the city's many churches visitors should make a point of seeing San Juan Letrán, beside the Augustinian Convent, San Pablo, which dates from the fifteenth century, Santa María la Antigua and the Cathedral. Dating from the sixteenth century, it houses the Cathedral Museum. The most famous palaces in Valladolid are the Santa Cruz palace, the country's first example of Renaissance art, and the Pimentel palace, while the numerous museums that bring culture to visitors and residents alike include the Science Museum, the Oriental Museum, the Casa de Cervantes, the National Sculpture Museum and the museum dedicated to Zorrilla, with free guided tours of the house where the famous Spanish playwright was born.
