Avilés, the third largest city in Asturias, located in the central coastal area of the Principality, has taken advantage of its position on the banks of the Avilés estuary since the eighth century, becoming a major trading and fishing port. As a result, the city has grown hand in hand with its industry. It is only 11 km from the regional airport (OVD) and close to a series of beautiful beaches with the Oscar Niemeyer International Cultural Centre as a symbol of innovation and culture. Avilés is well known as a friendly, welcoming city with exquisite gastronomy.
Streets with history
The historic centre of the city has been officially declared a Historical and Artistic Site, and today it is considered Asturias' finest mediaeval town. A walk through its streets, with their porticoes, squares, palaces, churches and monuments takes you through its history from the town's origins to modern times, with buildings in styles ranging from Romanesque and Gothic to Baroque and Art nouveau.
City of contrasts
Although Avilés is small, it is full of contrasts: just 5 km away we find two long beaches and natural sand dunes, a lighthouse and an old mine (Arnao), from which you can go to the beach of the same name. The port has a long history as a centre for trade and in 2012 it became a port of call for cruise ships.
The city has also acted as the backdrop for films and TV commercials, including Woody Allen's "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" and Shakespeare's "Richard III", directed by Sam Mendes and starring Kevin Spacey.
Cultural growth and increased tourism
The most important project undertaken in the city in recent decades is expected to be completed before 2020. Known as the Island of Innovation, it will stand on the Avilés estuary and will be the scene for all kinds of exhibitions, festivals, conferences, concerts, workshops, local, national and international events, museums, etc. At the heart of the project is the Oscar Niemeyer International Cultural Centre, created by the architect of the same name, which has become the main promoter of cultural events in the city.
The initiative is intended to raise international awareness of Avilés and increase the number of tourists. To cater for the growth of tourism in Avilés in the coming years we are pleased to offer you the Silken Villa de Avilés, a pleasant four-star hotel with an excellent location.
