    Oviedo is a city in and capital (according to the Statute of Autonomy of Asturias) of the Principality of Asturias, Spain.

    It is the commercial, religious, administrative and university centre of the region, and the see of the Archdiocese of Oviedo.

    The municipality of Oviedo is the second most populated in the region with 225,391 inhabitants. It has an excellent transport network. Railway transport in Asturias is particularly developed. Oviedo has three stations: Estación del Norte, Llamaquique and La Corredoria. The closest airport is Asturias Aiport, located in Santiago del Monte, 45 km away. From there, it provides services to many Spanish cities and European destinations.

    The location of Oviedo: the city is located in the centre of the Principality of Asturias, with an area of 186.65 km² between the rivers Nalón and Nora (the largest rivers in the city, along with the river Trubia), although neither of them pass through the city. It is bordered to the north by the towns Las Regueras and Llanera, to the south by Mieres and Ribera de Arriba, to the east by Siero and Langreo and to the west by Grado and Santo Adriano.

    The city is known as Uviéu or Uvieo in Asturian. Its Castillian name, "Oviedo", is the official and most widely used name. The inhabitants of Oviedo are called ovetense in Castillian Spanish, although they are also popularly known as carbayones (oaks), in memory of a tree that symbolised the city for centuries.

    Oviedo is a city with a wide cultural offering, featuring a number of monuments and museums. It is also a city with many local fiestas: San Mateo (31 September), La Balesquida, and La Feria de la Ascensión.

    For visitors to the city, Oviedo has a wide transport network. There is a city bus service which has thirteen routes that go through the city and the municipality’s largest populations daily.  There is also a night route, known as "búho", on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, which offers five night services.
