León is a small and pretty Spanish city which, with less than 150,000 inhabitants, was the capital of the former Kingdom of León and a key step towards the north-west peninsula, which has been enriched for centuries by the Camino de Santiago.
León has an impressive wealth of monuments and art. In prime of place is its cathedral, called "La Pulcra Leonina", with its Gothic style, of which its magnificent stained glass windows and central portico are the main features. The San Isidoro Basilica is a definite must-see monument in León. The Royal Pantheon is particularly significant as an earlier monument than the Roman Temple, to which it is attached, which has primitive Romanesque features, inspired by the artists of the Asturian Court, and even Visigothic features. The city of León has the privilege of being home to an excellent masterpiece by Gaudí. Casa Botines was built in the 19th century. The San Marcos convent, next to the Bernesga River, dates back to the 12th century, and this building has been used for various purposes - a convent, barracks and a prison. Today it is a parador hotel. The "Barrio Húmedo" (literally, the "Wet Quarter") dominates the urban zones of the city, with its narrow streets and many hospitality establishments where you can sample tapas and wines from the land.
