Ciudad Real belongs to the Autonomous Community of Castile-La Mancha. It is bordered by the provinces of Toledo to the north, Cuenca to the northeast, Albacete to the east, Córdoba and Jaén to the south and Badajoz to the west.
Ciudad Real became one of the cities included in the Spain Convention Bureau in 2008, which presented a starting point for the city’s vocation as a centre for conferences and events.
Decisive factors such as its strategic location, combined with transport links such as the AVE (high-speed train) or the future Ciudad Real Central Airport, are added advantages making Ciudad Real an essential place to visit.
The capital of the province is a pleasant city to walk around, ideal in size for residents and visitors. The centre of the city consists of a network of pedestrian streets, which encourage both trade and visits to its main plazas and monuments. Three periods of construction can be identified in Ciudad Real - the Gothic period in the churches of Santiago, San Pedro, the Cathedral (Priory of Spanish Military Orders), and Puerta de Toledo; the modernity period at the end of the 19th century, with the patronage of the new institutions: Palacio de la Diputación, Casino, Palacio Episcopal; and nowadays the capital is being embellished with numerous sculptures, many of which pay homage to the most illustrious character of La Mancha - Don Quijote. It is also home to the Quijote Museum and a wide cultural offering, not only with the museums’ constant exhibitions such as that of López Villaseñor or the Fourth Centenary (in the former convent of La Merced), but also with the possibility to participate in many activities such as dramatised tours, wine tasting, etc.
