As it was once the capital of the County of Barcelona, it is often referred to in Spanish as "Ciudad Condal" (literally Count City).
Barcelona has set the scene for various world events, which has helped to shape the city and project its image on an international level. The most significant of these events have been the Universal Exhibition in 1888, the International Exhibition in 1929, the summer Olympic Games in 1992 and the 2004 Universal Forum of Cultures. It also hosts the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean.
