Avilés, Asturias’ third largest city located in the central coastal area of the Principality, has seized on its location on the banks of the Avilés Estuary since the 8th century, which has transformed into a significant commercial and fishing port since that time. This has contributed to the development of the city, together with its industry. It is situated only 11 km from the region’s airport (OVD), close to the beautiful beaches and with the Oscar Niemeyer International Cultural Centre as a symbol of innovation and culture. Avilés is portrayed to the world as being a welcoming city, with good manners and exquisite cuisine.

Although it is small, Avilés is a town that is full of contrasts: Within a very short distance (5 km), we can enjoy the two large beaches and natural dunes, a lighthouse, and a former mine (Arnao), from which you can access Arnao beach. Over the years, the port has become significant due to its commercial character, and had grown to cruise ship scale by 2012.
On the other hand, the city has been the setting for films and television advertisements, in particular with Woody Allen’s work "Vicky, Cristina and Barcelona", as well as some big performances such as "Richard III", Shakespeare’s masterpiece directed by Sam Mendes and starring Kevin Spacey.
Avilés is a city with a great deal to offer:
